Umrah Etiquette: How to Behave in Makkah and Madinah

Performing Umrah is not just about completing the rituals — it is also about how you behave in the holiest places on Earth. Your manners, patience, and respect for other pilgrims are part of your worship. This guide covers the proper etiquette for pilgrims in Makkah and Madinah.

Etiquette Inside the Haram (Makkah and Madinah)

• Enter with your right foot and recite the prescribed dua for entering the mosque
• Keep your voice low — the Haram is a place of worship, not a social gathering
• Do NOT push or shove — even in crowded areas, be patient and gentle
• Do NOT reserve seats by placing items and leaving — others need the space
• Do NOT walk in front of someone who is praying (cross behind them, not in front)
• Do NOT take photos of other pilgrims without permission (especially women)
• Do NOT bring food or drinks inside the prayer area (water/Zamzam is OK)
• Turn off your phone or put it on silent — ringing phones disturb worshippers
• Do NOT use the Haram floor as a sleeping area during non-prayer times — use designated rest areas
• Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing

Tawaf Etiquette

• Walk calmly and respectfully — do not run (except the Sunnah of ramal in first 3 circuits for men)
• Do NOT push to get closer to the Kaabah — the outer circles are equally valid
• Do NOT stop in the middle of Tawaf to take photos — wait until after completion
• Do NOT touch the Kaabah walls or the Black Stone forcefully — if you cannot reach, pointing is sufficient
• Keep your Ihram clothing properly adjusted — do not let it drag on the floor
• Make dua throughout Tawaf — this is the best time for supplication

Interacting with Other Pilgrims

• Smile and say 'Salam' to fellow pilgrims — they are your brothers and sisters in faith
• Help elderly pilgrims — offer your seat, help them find their way, push their wheelchair
• Be patient with crowds — everyone is here for the same reason; do not lose your temper
• Respect different cultures — pilgrims come from 180+ countries; customs vary
• Do NOT stare at women or take photos of them — this is strictly prohibited
• Share the Zamzam water stations — do not hog the area
• Keep children close and quiet — do not let them run around or disturb worshippers

Etiquette at the Prophet's Mosque (Madinah)

• Send abundant salutations (Salawat/Durood) upon the Prophet (PBUH)
• At the Prophet's grave: Be respectful, do not raise your voice, do not touch or kiss the grille
• Do NOT face the grave while praying — face the Qibla (Kaabah direction) like the Prophet taught
• Visit the Rawdah only with a permit (via Nusuk app) and respect the time slot
• In the Rawdah: Keep conversation minimal — it is described as 'a garden from the gardens of Paradise'
• Pray 2 rakats of Tahajjud/Tahiyyatul Masjid upon entering

General Behavior Tips

• Be patient with hotel staff, drivers, and shopkeepers — they serve millions of pilgrims
• Bargain respectfully in markets — it is expected, but do not be aggressive
• Do NOT litter — use trash bins (they are everywhere in the Haram area)
• Dress modestly at all times — you are in the holiest cities on Earth
• Avoid arguments and foul language — Ihram prohibits arguing
• Be generous — give charity to the poor you see near the Haram
