Performing Umrah is a deeply spiritual experience, but many pilgrims โ especially first-timers โ make mistakes that can affect their pilgrimage. Some mistakes are minor (like not knowing where to start Tawaf), while others can invalidate your Umrah (like violating Ihram rules). This guide covers 10 common mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Not Learning the Rituals Before Traveling
Many pilgrims arrive in Makkah without knowing how to perform Tawaf, Sa'i, or the proper duas. They rely on group leaders or strangers, which leads to confusion and anxiety. Solution: Watch YouTube tutorials, read a guidebook, and practice the duas before your trip. HTG Travels provides all our clients with a pre-departure Umrah guide booklet.
2. Using Scented Products in Ihram
This is the most common Ihram violation. Pilgrims unknowingly use scented soap, shampoo, deodorant, or hand sanitizer while in Ihram. Solution: Buy unscented products before travel. Carry unscented soap and shampoo. Avoid scented hand sanitizers โ use unscented ones or plain water.
3. Pushing and Shoving During Tawaf
The Mataf (Tawaf area) can be extremely crowded, especially near the Kaabah. Some pilgrims push, shove, or argue to get closer. This violates the spirit of Ihram (no arguing allowed). Solution: Walk on the outer circles of the Mataf โ it takes longer but is calmer and safer. Do not push to touch the Kaabah or Black Stone if it is too crowded.
4. Booking Hotels Too Far from the Haram
To save money, some pilgrims book hotels 2-3km from the Haram. Walking 4-6km per day in heat is exhausting, especially for elderly pilgrims. Solution: Book within 500m of the Haram if possible. If budget is tight, choose a hotel with a free 24/7 shuttle service. HTG Travels guarantees hotel distance in writing.
5. Not Booking Nusuk Permits in Advance
Rawdah Mubarak permits fill within seconds during peak seasons. Pilgrims who arrive without permits cannot visit the Rawdah. Solution: Create your Nusuk account and verify it BEFORE traveling. Book permits at midnight Saudi time (2 AM Pakistan time). HTG Travels arranges Nusuk permits for all our Umrah clients.
6. Performing Tawaf in the Wrong Direction
Tawaf must be performed counter-clockwise (Kaabah on your left side). Some first-time pilgrims walk clockwise by mistake. Solution: Follow the crowd โ everyone walks counter-clockwise. If unsure, ask a nearby guard or pilgrim.
7. Not Carrying Enough Water and Snacks
A single Tawaf + Sa'i session can take 2-3 hours, plus waiting for prayers. Pilgrims who don't carry water or snacks get dehydrated and weak. Solution: Carry a small backpack with a water bottle, dates, biscuits, and a prayer mat. Zamzam water is available throughout the Haram but having your own is convenient.
8. Wearing New Shoes for the First Time
New shoes cause blisters. Walking 15-20km per day in Makkah with blistered feet is painful. Solution: Wear broken-in, comfortable shoes. Crocs or soft sandals are popular among pilgrims. Bring blister plasters just in case.
9. Not Having Travel Insurance
Medical care in Saudi Arabia is expensive for non-residents. Without insurance, a simple hospital visit can cost SAR 500-2,000 (PKR 38,000-150,000). Solution: Buy travel insurance before your trip. It costs PKR 2,000-5,000 for a 10-day trip and covers medical emergencies.
10. Forgetting to Collect Zamzam Water Properly
Airlines allow 5-10 liters of Zamzam water per pilgrim on the return flight. Many pilgrims forget to collect it, or buy fake Zamzam from unauthorized sellers. Solution: Collect Zamzam from the official distribution points near the Haram. Use the airline-approved plastic containers (available for SAR 10-20 near the Haram).
