Winter Umrah: Why December is the Best Time to Go

If you are planning Umrah from Pakistan, winter (December-February) is arguably the best time to go. The weather in Makkah and Madinah is pleasant, prices are lower than Ramadan, crowds are smaller, and many hotels offer kids-stay-free promotions. This guide explains why winter Umrah is the smart choice and how to plan it.

Why Winter is the Best Time for Umrah

1. Pleasant Weather (20-28°C)

Makkah and Madinah are extremely hot from May to September (40-48°C). Walking around the Haram, performing Tawaf, and doing Ziyarat in that heat is physically exhausting and risky for elderly pilgrims and children. In winter (December-February), temperatures drop to a comfortable 20-28°C — perfect for long walks, outdoor Ziyarat, and standing in the Mataf without overheating.

2. Lower Prices

Umrah package prices in winter are 30-50% cheaper than Ramadan and peak summer. Hotels reduce their rates, airlines offer off-season fares, and transport costs are lower. A 10-day Premium Umrah package that costs PKR 350,000 in Ramadan can be booked for PKR 180,000-220,000 in December.

3. Fewer Crowds

Winter is off-peak season. The Haram is less crowded, meaning shorter queues for Tawaf, easier access to the Mataf, faster Nusuk permit processing for Rawdah visits, and better availability at walking-distance hotels. You can pray in the front rows without arriving 2 hours early.

4. Kids-Stay-Free Hotel Deals

Many hotels near the Haram offer winter promotions where children under 6 or 12 stay free with their parents. This can save PKR 30,000-50,000 per child on a 10-day package. Some hotels also include free buffet breakfast for children during winter promotions.

5. Comfortable Ziyarat

Ziyarat (visiting historical Islamic sites in Makkah and Madinah) involves outdoor walking and bus travel. In summer, this is brutal — 45°C heat with no shade at sites like Jabal al-Nour (Cave of Hira). In winter, Ziyarat is a pleasant experience — cool breeze, comfortable walking, and the option to visit Taif (mountain city, even cooler) as a day trip.

Winter Umrah Package Prices (December 2026 - February 2027)

  • Economy (3-star, shuttle to Haram): PKR 150,000-180,000 per person (10 days)
  • Premium (4-star, walking distance): PKR 200,000-250,000 per person (10 days)
  • VIP (5-star, Clock Tower): PKR 350,000-450,000 per person (10 days)
  • Family Package (2 adults + 2 kids): PKR 500,000-650,000 total (10 days, economy)
  • Group Package (5+ pilgrims): 10-15% additional discount on above rates

What to Pack for Winter Umrah

Winter in Saudi Arabia is mild but evenings can be cool (12-15°C in Madinah). Pack:

  • Light jacket or sweater for evenings (Madinah gets cool)
  • Standard Ihram clothing (no special winter Ihram needed)
  • Comfortable walking shoes (you will walk more in pleasant weather)
  • Sunscreen (UV is still strong, even in winter)
  • Socks (marble floors can be cold in the morning)

Best Winter Dates for Umrah

  • Early December (before Christmas): lowest prices, smallest crowds
  • Late December (Christmas/New Year): slightly higher prices, still good weather
  • January: best weather of the year, moderate prices
  • February: warming up slightly, still comfortable, good availability
