Performing Umrah during summer (May-September) is challenging due to extreme heat (45-48°C in Makkah). However, it is also the cheapest time to go and the least crowded. If you must travel during summer, this survival guide will help you stay safe and comfortable.
Why Summer Umrah is Different
- Temperatures: 40-48°C during the day, 30-35°C at night
- Package prices: 30-50% cheaper than winter and Ramadan
- Crowds: Much smaller — easier Tawaf, shorter queues, better hotel availability
- Daylight: Long days (Fajr at 5 AM, Maghrib at 7 PM) — more time for worship
- Risk: Heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke if not careful
10 Summer Umrah Survival Tips
- Perform Tawaf between 2-5 AM (coolest time, fewest people, safest)
- Alternatively, perform Tawaf after Isha (8-10 PM) when it cools down
- NEVER perform Tawaf between 11 AM - 4 PM — this is peak heat, dangerous
- Drink 4-5 liters of water per day (carry a 1-liter bottle, refill at Zamzam stations)
- Carry ORS packets — mix with water if you feel dizzy or excessively sweaty
- Wear a hat or carry an umbrella when walking outside the Haram
- Use the Haram's air-conditioned areas during peak heat hours
- Eat light meals — heavy food in heat causes sluggishness
- Wear loose, light-colored clothing (Ihram is already ideal — white reflects heat)
- If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or stop sweating: STOP, sit in AC, drink cold water, seek medical help
Signs of Heat Exhaustion (Seek Help Immediately)
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Excessive sweating followed by stopping of sweat
- Headache
- Nausea or vomiting
- Rapid pulse
- Muscle cramps
- Pale, clammy skin
- If you experience these: Sit in AC immediately, drink cold water with ORS, and if symptoms persist, go to the Haram medical center (free treatment available)
Best Times for Each Activity in Summer
- Tawaf: 2-5 AM (Fajr) or 9-11 PM (after Isha)
- Sa'i: Same times as Tawaf (Sa'i area is air-conditioned, so slightly safer)
- Ziyarat: 6-8 AM (early morning) or 5-7 PM (sunset)
- Prayers: Inside the Haram (air-conditioned, safe at any time)
- Rest: 11 AM - 4 PM (stay in air-conditioned hotel room)
- Shopping: Malls are air-conditioned (safe any time)
