Umrah for Women: Complete Guide for Female Pilgrims from Pakistan

Women face unique considerations when performing Umrah โ€” from Ihram rules to Mahram requirements, safety concerns to menstrual issues. This guide addresses everything female pilgrims from Pakistan need to know for a comfortable and spiritually fulfilling Umrah journey.

Mahram Requirement

Saudi Arabia requires women under 45 to travel with a Mahram (male guardian โ€” husband, father, brother, son, uncle, or grandfather) for Umrah. Women 45 and above may travel in organized groups without a Mahram (subject to current Saudi regulations โ€” check with HTG Travels for the latest rules).

  • Mahram must be a blood relative or husband (not a cousin or friend)
  • Mahram must also have a valid Umrah visa/eVisa
  • Women 45+ traveling in groups: Need group leader authorization and NOC from family
  • Always check current rules with HTG Travels before booking โ€” Saudi regulations change frequently

Ihram Rules for Women

  • Women's Ihram: Wear modest, loose-fitting clothing (any color โ€” not restricted to white)
  • Abaya is recommended but not mandatory โ€” any loose dress that covers the body is acceptable
  • Face: Do NOT cover the face with niqab/burqa during Ihram (this is a specific prohibition for women in Ihram)
  • Hands: Do NOT wear gloves
  • Hair: Do NOT cover the head with a face veil, but hijab/headscarf IS required (normal hijab is fine)
  • Footwear: Wear comfortable shoes or sandals (no restriction on covering feet for women)
  • Perfume: Not allowed during Ihram (same as men)

What Women Should Pack for Umrah

  • 3-4 sets of loose abayas or salwar kameez (dark colors show less dirt)
  • Extra hijabs/scarves (they get sweaty and dusty)
  • Comfortable closed shoes or sneakers (for long walks in the Haram)
  • Socks (marble floors can be cold and slippery)
  • Unscented personal care products (unscented soap, shampoo, deodorant)
  • Sanitary products (even if not expecting your period โ€” stress can change cycles)
  • Pain relievers (paracetamol/ibuprofen for cramps or headaches)
  • Small prayer mat (for praying in non-Haram areas)
  • Tissues and wet wipes (not all restrooms provide them)

Menstruation During Umrah

If a woman gets her period during Umrah, she cannot perform Tawaf (circumambulating the Kaabah requires purity). Here is what to do:

  • Wait until your period ends, perform ghusl (purification bath), then perform Tawaf
  • You can still perform Sa'i (walking between Safa and Marwah) โ€” it does not require purity
  • You can still enter the Haram, pray (when pure), make duas, and read Quran (from memory or app)
  • If your period does not end before your departure: Consult a scholar โ€” some allow completing Tawaf later with a sacrifice (damm)
  • Carry menstrual products and plan for this possibility โ€” it is common among female pilgrims

Safety Tips for Female Pilgrims

  • Stay with your Mahram or group at all times โ€” the Haram is extremely crowded
  • If separated from your group: Go to the designated meeting point (agree on one before entering the Haram)
  • Save emergency contacts on your phone (Mahram, group leader, HTG Travels coordinator)
  • Carry a card with your name, passport number, hotel name, and emergency contact (in case your phone dies)
  • Use women-only prayer areas if you feel more comfortable (they exist in both Harams)
  • Trust your instincts โ€” if a situation feels uncomfortable, walk away

Women-Only Areas in the Haram

  • Both Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi have designated women's prayer areas
  • Women's sections are clearly marked with signage
  • These areas are staffed by female guards who can assist with directions
  • The women's section in the Rawdah (Madinah) requires a Nusuk permit โ€” same as men
  • Women can pray in the general area as well โ€” the women's section is optional, not mandatory
