Ihram Rules Complete Guide: What to Do and What to Avoid

Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters before performing Umrah or Hajj. It involves wearing specific clothing and following a set of rules. Violating these rules intentionally requires a penalty (fidyah or damm). This guide covers all Ihram rules every Pakistani pilgrim must know.

How to Enter Ihram

Ihram is entered at specific boundary points called Miqat:

• Perform ghusl (purification bath) and wear clean clothes before reaching Miqat
• For men: Wear two unstitched white cloths (izar around waist, rida over shoulders)
• For women: Wear modest, loose-fitting clothing (any color, face and hands visible)
• Apply perfume BEFORE entering Ihram (not after)
• Pray 2 rakats of Ihram prayer (if not in prohibited prayer times)
• Make the intention (niyyah) for Umrah: 'Labbayka Allahumma Umrah'
• Recite the Talbiyah: 'Labbayka Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka la shareeka laka labbayk...'
• From this moment, all Ihram restrictions apply until you complete Umrah and trim/shave your hair

What is PROHIBITED During Ihram (For Both Men and Women)

• Using perfume or scented products (soap, shampoo, lotion, deodorant)
• Cutting, trimming, or removing hair from any part of the body
• Clipping or filing nails
• Covering the face (for women — niqab must be removed in Ihram)
• Covering the head (for men — no hats, caps, or turbans)
• Wearing stitched clothing that follows the shape of the body (for men)
• Hunting or killing animals (except dangerous ones like snakes/scorpions)
• Arguing, fighting, or using foul language
• Engaging in intimate relations or marriage proposals
• Wearing gloves or socks that cover the ankles (for men)

What is ALLOWED During Ihram

• Taking a shower or bath (with unscented soap)
• Using sunscreen (unscented)
• Wearing a belt or pouch to hold valuables
• Wearing sandals or slippers (that do not cover the ankles for men)
• Wearing a watch, rings, or eyeglasses
• Using a phone, camera, and electronics
• Carrying an umbrella for shade (for men, it should not touch the head directly)
• Using Vaseline or unscented cream to prevent chafing

Penalties for Violating Ihram Rules

If a pilgrim violates an Ihram rule, a penalty (fidyah) is required:

• Using perfume or scented products: Slaughter a sheep or fast 3 days or feed 6 poor people
• Cutting hair or nails: Feed 6 poor people or fast 3 days or slaughter a sheep
• Wearing stitched clothing (men): Same penalty as above
• Covering head/face: Same penalty as above
• Hunting: Must slaughter an equivalent animal and distribute the meat to the poor
• Intimate relations: Invalidates Umrah (must be repeated) AND requires a sacrifice

Exiting Ihram (After Umrah)

Ihram ends when you complete the following:

• 1. Completed Tawaf (7 rounds around the Kaabah)
• 2. Completed Sa'i (7 trips between Safa and Marwah)
• 3. Shaved (halq) or trimmed (taqsir) your hair
• After halq/taqsir, all Ihram restrictions are lifted — you can use perfume, cut nails, wear regular clothes, etc.
