First Time Umrah: Complete Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

If you are performing Umrah for the first time, this guide will walk you through every step โ€” from booking your package to completing the rituals and returning home. Umrah is a beautiful spiritual journey, and being well-prepared makes it even more meaningful.

Phase 1: Booking and Preparation (Before Travel)

  • Contact HTG Travels on WhatsApp with your preferred dates and budget
  • Choose your package tier (Economy, Premium, or VIP)
  • Submit passport, CNIC, and photos for visa processing
  • Get your Saudi eVisa or Umrah visa (1-3 days processing)
  • Book flights (Sialkot/Lahore/Islamabad/Karachi to Jeddah)
  • Book hotels (aim for within 500m of Haram in Makkah, within 300m in Madinah)
  • Get meningitis ACWY vaccination (mandatory, 10+ days before travel)
  • Download Nusuk app and create an account for Rawdah permits
  • Learn the rituals: watch YouTube tutorials on Tawaf, Sa'i, and duas
  • Pack your bags (see our Umrah Packing List guide)

Phase 2: Travel Day

  • Arrive at airport 3 hours before international flight
  • Carry: passport, visa printout, hotel confirmation, vaccination certificate
  • Wear comfortable travel clothes (NOT Ihram yet โ€” change at Miqat or on the plane)
  • On the plane: Rest, pray, prepare mentally for the spiritual journey
  • Approximately 30-45 minutes before landing in Jeddah, change into Ihram (if performing Umrah immediately)
  • Make the niyyah (intention) for Umrah and recite Talbiyah

Phase 3: Arriving in Saudi Arabia

  • Clear immigration at Jeddah airport (have visa and passport ready)
  • Collect luggage and proceed to transport (pre-arranged by HTG Travels)
  • Drive to Makkah (90-120 minutes from Jeddah airport)
  • Check into your hotel
  • Rest briefly, then prepare for Umrah

Phase 4: Performing Umrah

Umrah consists of 4 main steps:

  • Step 1: Enter Ihram at Miqat (wear Ihram clothing, make intention, recite Talbiyah)
  • Step 2: Tawaf โ€” walk 7 times counter-clockwise around the Kaabah
  • Step 3: Sa'i โ€” walk 7 times between Safa and Marwah hills
  • Step 4: Halq or Taqsir โ€” shave (men) or trim hair (men and women)
  • After Step 4, your Umrah is complete and Ihram restrictions are lifted

Phase 5: Stay in Makkah

  • Perform additional Tawafs (Nafl Tawaf โ€” can be done anytime, no Ihram needed)
  • Pray all 5 daily prayers in the Haram (reward multiplied by 100,000)
  • Perform Ziyarat (visit Cave of Hira, Cave of Thawr, Arafat, Mina)
  • Drink Zamzam water regularly (available throughout the Haram)
  • Read Quran and make duas โ€” this is the best place on Earth for dua
  • Rest between prayer times โ€” do not exhaust yourself

Phase 6: Travel to Madinah

  • Travel from Makkah to Madinah (4-5 hours by road, 2 hours by Haramain train)
  • Check into hotel near Masjid an-Nabawi
  • Visit the Prophet's Mosque (Rawdah permit required via Nusuk app)
  • Send salutations upon the Prophet (PBUH) at his grave
  • Perform Ziyarat in Madinah (Quba Mosque, Qiblatayn Mosque, Uhud, Baqi)
  • Pray 40 prayers in Masjid an-Nabawi (Sunnah, but very rewarding)

Phase 7: Return Home

  • Collect Zamzam water from official distribution points (5-10 liters allowed on flight)
  • Arrive at Jeddah airport 3 hours before departure
  • Reflect on your journey and make dua for acceptance
  • Share your experience with family and friends
  • Continue the spiritual habits you developed (prayers, Quran, duas)
