The Schengen visa biometric appointment is a mandatory step in the visa application process for all Pakistani citizens. Since 2015, the Visa Information System (VIS) requires every Schengen visa applicant to submit biometric data โ 10 fingerprints and a digital photograph โ at the time of application. This biometric data is stored in a central database shared by all Schengen embassies, allowing them to verify applicant identity and detect multiple applications. This guide explains the complete biometric appointment process in Pakistan, what documents to bring, what happens during the appointment, biometric exemption rules, and tips for a smooth submission at BLS, Gerry's, and TLScontact centers.
What Is the Schengen Visa Biometric Requirement?
Since November 2015, every Schengen visa applicant between the ages of 12 and 70 must submit biometric data โ 10 fingerprints (all fingers) and a digital photograph โ as part of their visa application. This is mandatory under the Visa Information System (VIS) regulation. The biometric data is stored in a central database for 5 years (59 months exactly). During this 5-year period, you do NOT need to submit biometrics again for subsequent Schengen visa applications โ your previous biometrics are reused. After 5 years, the data is automatically deleted and you must submit fresh biometrics. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting (but still need photograph).
- Mandatory for all applicants aged 12-70 (since November 2015)
- Required data: 10 fingerprints (all fingers) + digital photograph
- Stored in central Visa Information System (VIS) database
- Shared by all Schengen embassies โ detects multiple applications
- Validity: 5 years (59 months) from submission date
- Within 5 years: No need to resubmit biometrics for new Schengen applications
- After 5 years: Data deleted, fresh biometrics required
- Exempt from fingerprints: Children under 12 (still need photograph)
- Exempt entirely: Heads of State, government ministers (rare)
How to Check If Your Biometrics Are on File
If you applied for a Schengen visa within the last 5 years, your biometrics may still be on file. To check, simply apply for a new Schengen visa โ the embassy system will automatically verify your biometric status. If your biometrics are valid, you do not need to attend a biometric appointment โ you can submit your application by courier or through a representative. If your biometrics are NOT on file (expired, never submitted, or system error), you must attend an in-person biometric appointment. Unfortunately, there is no public portal to check biometric status โ you find out only when applying. HTG Travels can advise based on your previous application history.
- Apply for new visa: Embassy system verifies biometric status automatically
- If biometrics valid (within 5 years): No appointment needed
- If biometrics invalid/expired: In-person appointment required
- No public portal to check biometric status independently
- HTG Travels: Can advise based on your previous application history
- Children under 12: Always need new photograph, no fingerprints
- If your previous visa was refused: Biometrics may still be on file
- If you changed passport: Biometrics still linked to your identity

Tips for Smooth Biometric Appointment
Several best practices ensure a smooth biometric appointment. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before the appointment โ clean, dry fingers produce better fingerprint scans. Remove all jewelry (rings, bracelets) before fingerprinting. Avoid using hand cream on the day of appointment โ it can interfere with fingerprint scanning. If you have cuts on your fingers, mention this to the biometric officer โ they may ask you to return once healed. Wear neat, modest clothing. Females can wear hijab but face must be fully visible for photograph. Avoid bright patterns or white clothing โ they affect photograph quality. Bring a book or headphones โ wait times can be long. Stay calm and follow officer instructions.
