Your driver takes a blind curve, and a wall of ice-white peaks opens up so suddenly that the whole van goes silent. That is the Karakoram Highway doing its thing, and almost nobody outside Pakistan has heard of it.
What You Are Driving
The KKH is a 1,300km road carved between Pakistan and China: the highest paved international road on Earth. It threads the old Silk Road up to Khunjerab Pass at about 4,700 metres, the highest paved border crossing anywhere. Locals call it the Eighth Wonder, and they have a case.
The Classic Route
- Islamabad to Naran via the Babusar route, or via Besham when Babusar is closed.
- Naran to Chilas to Gilgit, where three mountain ranges collide.
- Gilgit to Hunza, the stretch everyone photographs.
- Hunza to Attabad Lake to Passu to Sost.
- Sost up to Khunjerab, where Pakistan and China shake hands.
Islamabad to Khunjerab is roughly 800km: possible in two brutal days, human in a week.
The Stops That Stay With You
Attabad Lake, born when the 2010 landslide buried the valley, is 14 kilometres of unfiltered turquoise you can boat across. Hunza rewards at least two nights: Baltit and Altit forts, apricot orchards, and Rakaposhi following you around like a loyal dog. The Passu Cones look painted, and a hundred photos will not do them justice. At the top, Khunjerab hands you snow, yaks, and a freezing wind, even in summer.
When to Go, What to Pack
May to October is the season; Babusar Pass opens roughly mid-June to September, and the Besham route runs year-round if it is closed. Pack layers for summer and winter in one day, sturdy shoes, serious sunscreen, motion sickness tablets, and a power bank. Carry PKR cash as well, because ATMs vanish after Gilgit.
Ground Rules
- No special permit for the KKH itself, but police check posts along the way: carry your passport and register where asked.
- Build buffer days; landslides close roads without appointments.
- Book Hunza hotels early in peak season.
- Hire a driver who knows the road; this is not a self-drive destination for first-timers.
Silence at 4,700 metres is its own language.
